Avinash Sable of India won the silver medal in the men’s 3000m steeplechase at the Commonwealth Games 2022, breaking his national record by nearly a second, clocking 8:11.20 to earn India’s first-ever Steeplechase Medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, UK.


Sable, 27, ran 8:11.20s to break his previous national record in 8:12.48 and finished second to Kenyan Abraham Kibiwot (8:11.15). Amos Serem of Kenya claimed bronze with a timing of 8:16.83. Kenya’s Abraham Kibiwot won gold in 8:11.15, while Amos Serum finished third in 8:16.83.

PM Modi and Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, Anurag Thakur congratulated the athletes via an online group video call.

Priyanka Goswami won a silver medal in the women’s 10,000m race walk earlier in the day, capping up an excellent day for India in the Commonwealth Games athletics tournament on Saturday.

Goswami also made history by being the first Indian woman to win a medal in race walking, taking silver in the 10,000m event.
