Dr Venkatesh Karthikeyan Appointed as National Convenor of IMA

In a significant move to combat the escalating threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in India, Dr. Venkatesh Karthikeyan has been appointed the National Convenor of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) – Standing Committee for Antimicrobial Resistance. This appointment marks a critical step in the IMA’s efforts to address a growing pandemic that threatens to undermine advances in medical treatment and public health.

Dr. Venkatesh Karthikeyan, who graduated from the prestigious AIIMS Patna and is known for his background in community medicine and deep commitment to public health, takes over the reins when antimicrobial resistance has become a global concern. His career, distinguished by proactive public health advocacy and significant contributions to medical education and research, positions him uniquely to lead this vital committee.

The AMR challenge is stark, with pathogens increasingly becoming resistant to standard treatments, leading to prolonged illnesses, higher medical costs, and increased mortality. Recognizing these threats, the IMA has been at the forefront of India’s battle against AMR, collaborating with healthcare providers, policymakers, international organizations, and the community to foster a multi-faceted approach to this crisis.

In his acknowledgement of the appointment, Dr. Karthikeyan expressed gratitude to the IMA leadership, including National President Dr. R V Asokan, Secretary General Dr. Anilkumar Nayak, HFS Dr. Shitij Bali, Chairman Dr. Narendra Saini, Dr. K M Abul Hasan, Dr Hariharan and other senior IMA leaders, whose support and guidance are crucial for advancing the committee’s objectives.

Dr. Karthikeyan’s appointment is significant when collaborative international efforts and innovative health strategies are vital to curbing the rise of drug-resistant infections. His leadership is expected to bring a renewed vigour to the IMA’s efforts in fighting AMR, aligning with global health priorities and safeguarding future generations from the threat of Antimicrobial Resistance.
