Goa Police: Sonali Phogat case suspect confessed to spiking drink

“When confronted, accused Sukhwinder Singh and Sudhir Sangwan (Phogat’s personal assistant) confessed they took Phogat to the restaurant on the pretext of partying, and there Sangwan mixed some obnoxious substance in the drinking water and forced her to drink it”, said Goa Inspector General of Police Omvir Singh Bishnoi.

On Friday, August 26, the Goa Police claimed that the accused in the death of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sonali Phogat confessed to deliberately mixing chemicals into a liquid she had consumed.

The police had opened an investigation into the accused – Sangwan and Singh – after receiving a complaint from Phogat’s brother Rinku Dhaka.

Both accused were questioned and arrested by Goa police overnight on Thursday. ” The post-mortem report remained inconclusive. The only way left is to subject the suspects to questioning to ascertain the manner of death,” Jaspal Singh, DGP of Goa told to media.

Despite initial reports that she died of a heart attack, a post-mortem in Goa revealed that Phogat had suffered multiple “blunt force injuries.”

Following that, the police established a case of “unnatural death” and included a murder charge in the First Information Report (FIR).

Phogat, a former TikTok star and social media influencer, arrived in Goa on August 22 with Sagwan and Wasi and checked into a hotel in Anjuna.
