Leaders from the BRICS nations, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have convened at the Sandton Convention Centre for a highly anticipated in-person summit. The event is marked by a spirit of unity and collaboration as leaders participate in plenary sessions and engage in discussions aimed at fostering growth and cooperation among the member countries. The summit follows three years of virtual meetings due to the global Covid-19 pandemic, underscoring the significance of this in-person interaction.

Ahead of the plenary sessions, the leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa posed for a collective BRICS family photograph. A symbolic visual emerged as Prime Minister Modi and Chinese Premier Xi Jinping were seen standing apart, while South African President Cyril Ramaphosa extended a gesture of unity by holding their hands together. This photograph captures the essence of cooperation amidst diversity.

The lineup of prominent leaders also includes Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Brazilian President Lula da Silva, showcasing the diverse representation within the BRICS group. The plenary sessions will be complemented by a cultural performance and a banquet dinner hosted by President Ramaphosa, providing a platform for further discussions and exchanges.

Prime Minister Modi’s arrival in South Africa was greeted with enthusiasm as he received a ceremonial welcome at the Waterkloof Air Force Base. The Indian diaspora, eagerly awaiting his presence, expressed their joy through spirited chants of ‘Vande Mataram’. Outside the Sandton Sun Hotel in Johannesburg, the Indian community welcomed him with vibrant drumbeats, underlining the warmth and excitement surrounding his visit.

The inaugural day of the summit featured the BRICS Business Forum Leaders’ Dialogue, during which PM Modi addressed the audience. He emphasized India’s prospective journey towards becoming a 5 trillion dollar economy, positioning itself as a key driver of global growth in the years ahead. His message highlighted the pivotal role of mutual trust and transparency, especially within the framework of the Global South.

BRICS, encompassing nations with significant world economies, stands as a testament to international collaboration and shared aspirations. As leaders gather in person after years of virtual engagement, the summit aims to fortify the bonds between member countries, fostering economic progress and global cooperation.
