Nalini, who was found guilty and condemned in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, has now petitioned the SC for the same relief, months after the Supreme Court ordered the release of AG Perarivalan, who was convicted in the case.
Nalini was the main name in the assassination case. She was present when the blast occurred, killing Rajiv Gandhi and twenty-one people. Since 2021, Nalini has been on medical bail. A second prisoner, Ravichandran, who has petitioned the Supreme Court for release, is also out on medical bail since 2021. Perarivalan, Nalini, and Ravichandran are Indians while the other four defendants in the case are Sri Lankan members of the LTTE organisation.
Supreme Court convicted seven people in 1999, with Nalini, Perarivalan, and two others being punished with the death penalty, while the others were ordered life imprisonment.
As a result of Sonia Gandhi’s call for mercy in 2000, Nalini’s death sentence was reduced to life in prison.
