Kolkata Gang Rape Case LIVE: 24-Year-Old Gang Raped In Security Guard's Room In Law College, 4 Arrested
Kolkata is brewing intense protest against the brutal gang rape of a 24 year old girl in Law College in Kolkata. The investigation of a first-year law student at South Kolkata Law College took a critical turn on Saturday as police arrested the college’s security guard, Pinaki Banerjee.
His arrest marks the fourth in the case, which has shaken the city and drawn public outrage. Earlier in the week, three other individuals were taken into custody, including Monojit Mishra, a former student leader affiliated with the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad.
According to investigators, Banerjee was on duty on the night of June 25 when the assault occurred. The survivor, a 24-year-old student, alleged that Mishra ordered Banerjee to step out of the guard’s room and he did. Inside that room, she said, her pleas for help were ignored as she endured the horrific assault. Two other students reportedly stood by as mute spectators.
Police sources said Banerjee neither attempted to help nor informed anyone at the college. He did not call the police. Questioning revealed he failed to carry out even basic duties expected of him during such a grave situation. His inaction, police said, amounted to criminal negligence.
The survivor recounted that the college’s main gate had been locked from the inside when the assault occurred. Mishra, once the president of the student wing and now reportedly holding an organisational post in South Kolkata’s TMC unit, led the assault, she said. Her statement detailed how the guard, asked to remain outside, complied without question, allowing the crime to unfold.
The incident, which surfaced publicly on Friday, sparked widespread condemnation and calls for accountability. The police acted swiftly. Mishra was arrested on Wednesday. On Thursday, two other students Zaib Ahmed, in his first year, and Pramit Mukherjee, a second-year student were also taken into custody.
Police are now probing whether the crime was planned in advance or if any larger network was involved. They are also looking into whether there was a lapse on the part of the college administration in ensuring student safety.
