EAM Jaishankar Emphasizes G20 Summit Significance & African Union's G20 Membership at UNGA

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has highlighted the significant outcomes of the G20 Summit held earlier this month in New Delhi, emphasizing its global importance. During his address at the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), EAM Jaishankar underscored India’s commitment to addressing the concerns of the most vulnerable populations and initiating key reforms.

India’s G20 presidency began with the Voice of the Global South Summit, an initiative aimed at prioritizing growth and development for those who need it most. The External Affairs Minister stressed the need to focus on the broader concerns of the international community rather than the narrow interests of a select few.

He noted that the African Union’s inclusion as a permanent member of the G20, facilitated by India’s initiative, marked a significant step in ensuring equitable representation for an entire continent that had long deserved such recognition. EAM Jaishankar suggested that this move should inspire the United Nations, an older organization, to modernize its Security Council to better reflect the current global landscape.

EAM Jaishankar began his address by extending greetings with “Namaste from Bharat!” and expressed the country’s full support for the UNGA’s theme of rebuilding trust and rekindling global solidarity. He highlighted the occasion as an opportunity to assess achievements and challenges while sharing aspirations and goals.
