In honour of Janmashtami, which commemorates Lord Krishna’s birth, prospective British prime minister Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty went to a temple on Thursday.
Sunak tweeted a photograph of him and his wife praying at the ISKCON temple in Watford, saying, “Today I went the Bhaktivedanta Manor temple with my wife Akshata to commemorate Janmashtami, in advance of the annual Hindu holiday commemorating Lord Krishna’s birthday.”
The photograph was also posted by the 42-year-old Conservative MP on his Instagram page.
In a Twitter post, posted yesterday, August 22, he was seen performing Gau Mata Pooja.
Sunak took his oath as a representative of the UK in the House of Commons in December 2019 while holding a copy of the Bhagavad Gita, a Hindu classic that is linked to Lord Krishna.
Recent polling indicates that Sunak is currently 32 points behind fellow Tories member and UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss in the contest to become the island’s 78th premier. The Conservative Party will name its next leader, who will succeed Boris Johnson as both party leader and prime minister, on September 5.
On July 7, Johnson announced his resignation as head of the Conservative Party, although he said he would stay in office as prime minister until the party’s members chose his replacement.
