On September 30, senior Congressman and MP Shashi Tharoor would submit his nomination for the position of party president.
Tharoor stated he will approach delegates from different states since he has five sets of nomination papers. He will require 50 delegates to propose his candidacy. After Sonia Gandhi beat Jitendra Prasad in 1998, the Congress will have a non-Gandhi leader for the first time in 25 years. When Sitaram Kesri beat Sharad Pawar and Rajesh Pilot in 1996, the party had a non-Gandhi leader in that position.
Madhusudan Mistri, the chairman of the Central Election Authority, would be at the Congress’s national headquarters to accept nominations for returning officers.
The elections for the party’s new president are scheduled to take place on October 17 at all PCCs, as mentioned in the notification issued by the Congress Party. The results will be announced on October 19, after the counting. The complete list of candidates will be made public at 5 pm on October 8th.
Mistry has urged the Congress party’s delegates to choose the president of the Indian National Congress in accordance with the guidelines established under Article 18.
There were rumours that Ashok Gehlot, the chief minister of Rajasthan, had expressed a desire to run for the party’s top office. Gehlot, however, clarified his decision to contest for the post of Congress President.
Digvijay Singh, a veteran in the Congress, declared on Friday that he was not running for party leader. The senior politician announced his decision to not run for president of the Congress during a news conference in Jabalpur but said that he would accept any instructions given to him by the party’s top brass.
After Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot announced his candidacy on Friday, there is a significant build-up to the Congress president election. Rahul Gandhi has stated categorically that “no member of the Gandhi family” will take over as the party’s next leader, according to Gehlot.
In the meanwhile, Ashok Gehlot and Shashi Tharoor are currently the front-runners for the position following Digvijay Singh’s explanation.
Rahul Gandhi called the job of Congress president an “ideological post” that “represents a set of beliefs, a belief system, and a vision of India.”
