Army Rescues 245 Stranded Individuals in North Sikkim

The Trishakti Corps, operating from October 7 to 13, 2023, successfully reached stranded residents in challenging mountainous terrain, and harshweather conditions.

According to officials, the Trishakti Corps of the Indian Army executed a courageous rescue operation in North Sikkim, successfully saving 245 individuals who were stranded in the village of Rabom due to the flash floods in the region. The extensive operation aimed to reconnect isolated villages that had been cut off as a result of the devastating natural disaster.

The Trishakti Corps, operating from October 7 to 13, 2023, successfully reached stranded residents in challenging mountainous terrain, thick jungles, and inclement weather conditions. They provided food, and medical assistance, and rescued 97 workers from the Kundan Hydro Power Project and 80-100 local residents.

Furthermore, the troops established a helipad within the village and created a secure foot-track, extending ongoing support to the affected communities in Rabom, Menshithang, and Chubin.

The Indian Air Force (IAF), in a separate statement, confirmed the evacuation of over 1,700 individuals from various flood-affected areas of Sikkim. The IAF’s Chinook and Mi-17 V5 helicopters have been actively engaged in the relief efforts, having conducted more than 200 sorties and delivering nearly 99 tonnes of relief supplies. The IAF reiterated its commitment to sustaining these operations as long as the need persists.

According to the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) report dated October 11, 8 PM, the death toll stood at 37, with 78 individuals reported as missing. The catastrophic flooding, triggered by the bursting of the Lhonak glacier in the Sikkim Himalayas on October 3, resulted in heightened water levels in Teesta, causing extensive damage to bridges, roads, and various infrastructural elements, severely impacting the region.
