Israel-Hamas War: EAM Jaishankar Holds Meeting to Oversee 'Operation Ajay' Registration Preparations

‘Operation Ajay’ was initiated by India on Wednesday to facilitate the return of its citizens affected by the strife between Israel and Hamas.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar led a meeting today to assess the preparations for ‘Operation Ajay’, aimed at repatriating Indian citizens currently stranded in Israel due to the ongoing conflict.

The registration process for Indian citizens began on Thursday, as revealed by sources. ‘Operation Ajay’ was initiated by India on Wednesday to facilitate the return of its citizens affected by the strife between Israel and Hamas.

The Ministry of External Affairs Official Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi, shared updates on social media, stating that the Ministry’s team is fully equipped and prepared to assist Indian citizens in their journey back home. His post read, “EAM @DrSJaishankar chaired a meeting today to review preparations for #OperationAjay. #TeamMEA stands ready to assist our citizens to return home.”

Indian citizens began registering for the operation on Thursday. There are an estimated 18,000 Indian citizens in Israel, including around 1,000 Indian students, according to Kobbi Shoshani, Israel’s Consul General to Midwest India.

Reports suggest that the first evacuation flight is expected to depart from Tel Aviv on Thursday evening. In parallel efforts to provide support, Deputy Chief of Mission Rajiv Bodwade and Commercial Representative Naveen Ramakrishna from the Indian embassy in Israel engaged with Indian companies in the region to address queries and extend any possible assistance.

Kobbi Shoshani, Israel’s Consul General to Midwest India, conveyed his congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for launching ‘Operation Ajay.’ He further emphasized the significant role of the Indian business community in contributing to the Israeli economy, indicating respect and admiration for their contributions.

Furthermore, the Israeli government has expressed its commitment to supporting the Indian embassy in Tel Aviv throughout ‘Operation Ajay.’

Addressing the Indian diaspora residing in Israel, Indian Ambassador to Israel Sanjeev Singla assured that the situation is being closely monitored. He also encouraged them to remain calm and vigilant, adhering to local security guidelines.

In response to the intensifying conflict between Israel and Hamas, the Embassy of India in Tel Aviv issued an important advisory to Indian citizens in Israel. It urged them to remain vigilant, follow safety protocols, exercise caution, and stay close to safety shelters as advised by local government authorities.

Recognizing the need for direct assistance, the Indian Embassy in Israel has established a 24-hour helpline at +972-35226748 and +972-543278392, as well as an email contact at cons1.telaviv@mea.gov.in for Indian citizens seeking aid during the ongoing conflict or wishing to register with the Embassy.
