Drug abuse has become an alarming problem in the country over the past few years. The amount of drugs and contraceptives being seized in every raid conducted by the authorities is increasing at a rapid rate.
Arunachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal, and Haryana are just some of the states where these raids end up with kilos of every kind of drug mostly Ganja. The Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman addressed the 65th founding day of the DRI that is the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and raised the concern of cocaine seeping into the country at an appalling speed and that the feds need to get the situation under control before it goes out of hand.
She suggested that with the country taking over the G-20 leadership the authorities should talk over smuggling and the increase of drugs in the countries and come up with some agreements to intercept the easy access and travel of these substances from one country to another and landing in the hands of people.
She also suggested that institutions like the DRI, CBIC, and the Revenue department should work together holding workshops for global cooperation on the issue. The lady also mentioned that the coming of cocaine into the country should be curbed as soon as possible before the country becomes a consuming country.
Sitharaman asked the parties conducting these raids to act smarter than the peddlers and conduct intensive and heavy drug-seizing raids. She concocted all this based on a series of facts and numbers where she informed the media about how the amount of drugs and contraceptives being seized is increasing and urged the authorities like FATF to look over this issue and work towards preventing it.
Ever since the lockdown and in the years ahead seizures of cocaine increased by 3479 percent and that of methamphetamine and heroin increased by 1281 percent with the maximum number of seizures being of Ganja.
