According to a study published in “The Journal of Wildlife Management,” the projected climatic scenarios between the years 2050 and 2070 are causing the extinction of various salamander species in eastern Canada and the United States.
The spotted salamander, blue-spotted salamander, four-toed salamander, and red-black salamander have all been studied extensively in this study. With the sustained climate change, 91 percent of blue spotted salamanders, 4 percent of four-toed salamanders, and 61 percent of red-backed salamanders are expected to be acceptable proportions of natural settings.
The lead author Brian W. Widmer,from Central Michigan University gave a statement that “Salamanders provide stability to food webs and while the species studied here are relatively common and wide-ranging, climate change will dramatically reduce their ability to persist and in turn, disrupt the functioning of ecosystems across the eastern United States and Canada,”
Salamanders have thin bodies, blunt snouts, short limbs extending at right angles to the body, and a tail in both larvae and adults, giving them a lizard-like appearance.
