Israel successfully repelled a significant drone and missile onslaught from Iran using its sophisticated multi-layered defence system. This defensive network has been refined over the years, particularly since Israel faced Iraqi Scud missile attacks during the 1991 Gulf War.

The Arrow system, comprising Arrow-2 and Arrow-3 missiles, stands as a crucial part of Israel’s long-range defence strategy. Designed specifically to counter ballistic missiles, this system operates outside the Earth’s atmosphere, intercepting threats with detachable warheads that collide with their targets. Israel Aerospace Industries leads the project, with Boeing assisting in interceptor production. Notably, Israel deployed the Arrow system for the first time during its recent conflict with Hamas, intercepting a missile launched towards its territory. Additionally, Germany has committed to purchasing the Arrow-3 system for approximately 4 billion euros.
Israel’s mid-range defence, known as David’s Sling, targets ballistic missiles within a range of 100 to 200 kilometres. Developed in collaboration between Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and the U.S. Raytheon Co, David’s Sling can also intercept aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles.
For short-range threats like rockets from Hamas in Gaza, Israel relies on the Iron Dome system. Operational since 2011, Iron Dome intercepts threats using radar-guided missiles. Each unit, developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems with U.S. support, can identify whether an incoming rocket poses a risk to populated areas. If not, the rocket is left to land safely. While initially designed to cover city-sized areas against rockets with ranges of 4 to 70 kilometres, its capabilities have expanded over time. Israel has even supplied two Iron Dome batteries to the U.S. Army and deployed a naval version to safeguard sea-based assets.
Beyond these systems, Israel is pioneering a laser-based defence mechanism aimed at countering enemy rockets and drones. This innovative approach promises to neutralize threats at a remarkably low cost of just $2 per interception.
