The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude 6.1 earthquake near Afghanistan and Pakistan in the early hours of Wednesday. The quake left at least 255 people dead and over 500 injured in the provinces of Paktika and Khost.
According to the USGS, the quake hit roughly 44 kilometres (27 miles) from the city of Khost in southern Afghanistan and had a depth of 51 kilometres. So far, no immediate reports of damage or deaths have been received.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said Shaking was felt over a range of some 500 km by about 119 million people in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India.
Pakistan media reported a mild intensity earthquake struck Islamabad and other parts of the country.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the 6.1 magnitude earthquake jolted 44 kilometres southwest of Khost, Afghanistan. According to ANI reports, which cites the most recent local sources, the casualties happened in four districts of Paktika province, the most severely affected eastern province.
According to local sources, the quake destroyed hundreds of houses in the area and caused land slides in Paktika.
“According to preliminary information … 100 people have been killed in Paktika, Gayan district, and in Afghan Dubai village, in Spera district of Khost province, 20 people have been exhumed,” Naseri said, reported Sputnik.
Tremors were also reported in Lahore, Multan, Quetta, and other Pakistani cities.
According to the Namal, the earthquake was felt for a few seconds and drove people fleeing into the streets.
5.0 magnitude earthquake jolted several Pakistani cities including Islamabad, Peshawar, Rawalpindi and Multan last Friday.
The shocks was also recorded in Faisalabad, Abbottabad, Swat, Buner, Kohat and Malakand, according to Geo News reported.
