In a significant development, the Centre submitted a petition to the Supreme Court in an effort to compel FIFA to immediately overturn the AIFF’s suspension. In order to address FIFA’s concerns regarding the influence of a third party, specifically the Committee of Administrators and election procedures, it requested revision of the SC orders dated May 18 and August 3.

As a result of “undue influence” from third parties, FIFA suspended AIFF with immediate effect on August 14, dealing a severe blow to Indian football. This was in reference to the fact that on May 18 the Supreme Court removed NCP MP Praful Patel from his position as president of the AIFF since elections had not yet been held, despite the fact that he had held the position for three terms of four years each. A Committee of Administrators made up of former Chief Election Commissioner SY Quraishi, Justice (retired) AR Dave, and former Indian football team captain Bhaskar Ganguly, was also formed to manage the AIFF.

It was necessary to hold elections that had been postponed for 18 months and to draught the AIFF constitution in accordance with model rules and the National Sports Code. India won’t be able to host the U-17 Women’s World Cup in 2022, which was slated to take place from October 11–30, if the sanction against AIFF is not lifted soon.

Showing disappointment, the CoA noted, “The fact that while the letter dated August 15, 2022, from FIFA stated that Indian Football, was being suspended from August 14, 2022, the discussions between the world body and all stakeholders in India were in full swing till late in the day on August 15, 2022”.
