NCRB index data reports Delhi as most unsafe for women

In 2021, Delhi registered 13,892 incidents of crimes against women, up significantly from 2020’s total of 9,782 cases, according to the most recent NCRB data.

According to the most recent statistics from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the nation’s capital was the most dangerous metropolitan area for women in the nation last year, with two underage girls being sexually assaulted every day. In 2021, Delhi registered 13,892 incidents of crimes against women, up significantly from 2020’s total of 9,782 cases, according to the most recent NCRB data.

However, NCRB data further states that cases of crimes against women in Delhi accounted for 32.20 per cent of overall crimes in the category among all 19 metropolitan cities. According to the statistics, Bengaluru had 3,127 incidences, while Mumbai, the world’s financial centre, witnessed 5,543 such occurrences. In 19 cities, Mumbai and Bengaluru were responsible for 12.76% and 7.2% of all offenses, respectively.

In addition, compared to other major cities with a population of over two million, the national capital reported the highest number of cases of crimes against women in the categories of kidnapping (3948), husband cruelty (4674), and girl child rapes (833) in 2021. On average, more than two girls were raped in Delhi each day in 2021, according to the most recent data.

The national capital recorded 136 cases of dowry deaths in 2021, which represents 36.26 percent of all deaths caused by the threat in 19 metropolitan cities. It is important to note that the national capital recorded 13,982 cases of crimes against women in 2021, whereas the total number of crimes in all 19 metropolitan cities was 43,414.

Out of a total of 8,664 occurrences in all major cities, Delhi recorded 3,948 cases of kidnapping and abduction of women. In contrast, Delhi reported 2,022 cases of attacks on women with the goal to offend their modesty in the previous year.

Meanwhile, the data states that there were 4,28,278 incidents of crime against women in 2021 compared to 3,71,503 cases in 2020, which, means the crime rate has increased by  15.3%.
