According to Raj Bhavan sources, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has recommended that Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren be disqualified as an MLA.
The EC has responded to Jharkhand governor Ramesh Bais’ request for its opinion on a complaint received by the opposition BJP that the CM must be qualified because he allegedly holds a profit-making office by obtaining a stone chips mining lease in his name.
Legislators from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) have been summoned and asked to arrive in Ranchi by the evening. As of now, there are no specifics about the Governor’s opinion. According to sources, the opinion was delivered to the Jharkhand Raj Bhavan in a sealed envelope this morning.
Jharkhand Governor Ramesh Bais, who had been in Delhi on a personal visit since Monday, returned to Ranchi on Thursday.
According to sources, ECI found Hemant Soren to be in violation of office of profit in its findings. According to sources, the Jharkhand Chief Minister violated Section 9A of the 1951 People Representative Act.
During the August 18 hearing, ECI heard from both Hemant Soren and his brother Basant Soren. The ECI has recommended disqualification, and the Governor will make the final decision.
ECI is looking into Hemant Soren’s decision to grant himself a mining lease. The BJP had sought his removal as an MLA on the grounds of corruption.
According to Article 192 of the Constitution, if there is any doubt as to whether a member of a House of the Legislature of a state has become subject to any of the disqualifications, the Governor will make the final decision.

Hemant Soren was accused of obtaining a mining licence in his and his brother’s names while serving as Jharkhand Chief Minister.
Nishikant Dubey slammed Hemant Soren, saying, “The Chief Minister of Jharkhand granted himself mining licences. There is no greater corruption than this. What ECI did (reported disqualification) should serve as a lesson to all politicians.”

Earlier in the day, the ED arrested Prem Prakash, an alleged close aide of Hemant Soren, a day after recovering two AK-47 rifles from his home. Prem Prakash was apprehended on Wednesday night following a search in connection with the alleged illegal mining case. He was apprehended in Ranchi in accordance with the provisions of the Money Laundering Act.
The ED raided several locations in Jharkhand on Wednesday as part of an ongoing money-laundering investigation into alleged illegal mining in the state.
