Joe Root delivered a masterclass, scoring 150 off 248 balls in a dominant knock. He shared a 142-run stand with Ben Stokes that frustrated the Indian bowlers. Stokes had to retire hurt due to cramping midway through the partnership. England lost a few quick wickets after Root was dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja. Stokes returned later in the session to stabilize the innings.
He saw off the day alongside Liam Dawson, taking England safely to Stumps.
