The Supreme Court has decided 6,844 cases since DY Chandrachud became India’s 50th Chief Justice on November 9.
In contrast to the 5,898 new cases that were submitted, the Supreme Court concluded 6,844 cases between November 9 and December 16. In accordance with information provided by the Supreme Court’s administration, 5,898 cases were submitted between November 9 and December 16. 2,511 applications for transfers and bail were resolved in total.
In November, CJI Chandrachud stressed the need for swift resolution of bail and transfer petitions and said that instances affecting an individual’s right to privacy would be given priority. He had stated that since bail issues impacted personal liberty, they should take precedence.
Every day of the week, the highest court’s benches would hear 10 bail cases and 10 transfer petitions, according to what he had previously stated.
In situations involving transfer petitions, one of the parties is trying to move a marital dispute to a different court. Case transfers from one court to another, whether within the same state or beyond it, can only be done by the Supreme Court.
The information on the Supreme Court’s high case disposition rate was revealed after Minister of Law and Justice Kiren Rijiju stated in the Rajya Sabha that the Court shouldn’t be entertaining bail applications and pointless PILs at a time when the backlog of cases is so great.
