Even as the Congress suffers from top leader Ghulam Nabi Azad’s departure, the worst appears to have passed, as 51 leaders are likely to leave and join Azad’s new party. Since Azad’s resignation, the party has lost 64 leaders.
Former Jammu and Kashmir deputy chief minister Tara Chand resigned from the party on Tuesday in support of Ghulam Nabi Azad.
They delivered a letter of resignation to Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
At a press conference, Chand and numerous others, including former ministers Abdul Majid Wani, Manohar Lal Sharma, Gharu Ram, and former MLA Balwan Singh, announced their resignations from their party, including their main membership.
“In support of Azad, we have sent a combined resignation letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi,” Balwan Singh stated.
Azad, 73, a former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister, abandoned his five-decade relationship with the Congress on Friday, calling the party “completely wrecked” and accusing Rahul Gandhi of “demolishing” the party’s whole consultation structure.
He plans to form a national-level party in Jammu & Kashmir shortly.
Over a dozen major Congress politicians, including former ministers and lawmakers, have already defected to Azad, as have hundreds of Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) members, municipal corporators, and district and block level officials.
