Gynavapi matter: SC bench headed by Justice Chandrachud to hear plea for stay on survey

On Friday night, the order by CJI Ramana directing the registry to list the matter before a bench headed by Justice Chandrachud was uploaded on the Supreme Court website.

An SC bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud will hear the plea demanding a stay on the survey of the Gyanvapi Mosque complex in Varanasi. On Friday night, the order by CJI Ramana directing the registry to list the matter before a bench headed by Justice Chandrachud was uploaded on the Supreme Court website.

The order read, “Upon being mentioned by Huzefa Ahmadi, senior counsel appearing on behalf of the petitioner, we deem it appropriate to direct the Registry to list the matter before the Bench presided over by Dr Justice DY Chandrachud.”

The Muslim side on Thursday requested a bench headed by CJI Ramana to pass an order to maintain status quo in the matter. However, the bench declined to order status quo, saying that it was not aware of the issue, as it had not seen the papers then. The bench stated, “We have not seen the papers. We don’t even know what is the matter. I don’t know anything… how can I pass an order. I will read and then pass orders… let me see.”
