At the UN Security Council on Monday, India made a barely disguised jab at China during a debate on advancing global security via communication and collaboration.
Ruchira Kamboj, India’s representative to the UN, stated that “any forceful or unilateral action that aims to change the status quo by force is an insult to shared security.”
Also emphasised by Ms. Kamboj is the fact that international cooperation is only possible “when all nations stand united against common challenges like terrorism and do not practise double standards while preaching otherwise.”
Even though the ambassador avoided naming any nations, the comment is significant given the impasse between India and China over the Chinese Army’s violations in eastern Ladakh, which has been going on since May 2020. After fierce battles with Chinese forces in the Galwan Valley on June 15, 2020, the situation deteriorated.
China served as the host nation for the summit.
Recently, China was accused by India’s foreign minister, S. Jaishankar, of disobeying border agreements, and he said that the Galwan Valley impasse has been clouding relations between the two countries as they continue to go through a very trying time.
“Since the 1990s, we and China have had agreements that forbid moving large numbers of soldiers into the border region. That has been overlooked by them. You are aware of what took place in the Galwan Valley. That issue still exists, and it has been obviously casting a shadow,” he said.
16 rounds of Corps Commander Level negotiations between India and China have already taken place to end the situation.
