While presiding over high-level ministerial signature events of India’s continuing chairmanship of the UN Security Council, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasised the need for changes in the UN.
At the UNSC Open Debate on ‘Maintenance of International Peace & Security: New Orientation for Reformed Multilateralism Jaishankar stated “While the debate on changes has wandered aimlessly, the actual world has altered tremendously. We see that in terms of economic prosperity, technology capabilities, political influence, and developmental progress.”
He further added “The call for change has been accelerated by growing stresses on the international system that we have experienced in recent years. On the one hand, they have highlighted the injustices and shortcomings of the present international order.”
On the other hand, they have also stated that a wider and deeper engagement is required to develop answers, according to Jaishankar.
He stated that the conclusion of these conversations would not only help decide the type of UN we want to see, but also the global order that best represents modern reality.
“Need for a New Orientation for a Reformed Multilateral System, as we’ve dubbed it, stems from this universal realisation. While the issue affects the whole membership, the UN Security Council has a significant stake in the resolution of this critical challenge,” he noted.
According to Jaishankar, the formation of the G20 represents a larger diffusion of talents and responsibilities. This awareness is gradually permeating the UN’s broader membership.
