Sonia Gandhi, the interim head of the Congress, asked the Enforcement Directorate today to postpone her appearance till she had recovered completely from Covid-19 and a lung infection.
Sonia Gandhi, who had been hospitalised at Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital since June 12, was released on June 20. Following the COVID infection, she suffered severe nasal bleeding and needed follow-up surgery.
“Since she has been strictly advised to rest at home following her hospitalisation due to Covid and lung infection, Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi has written to ED today seeking a few weeks’ postponement of her appearance there until she has recovered completely,” Congress’ communications-in-charge Ramesh said in a tweet.
According to the party, Sonia Gandhi was being treated for a fungal infection in her lower respiratory tract as well as post-COVID symptoms.
Enforcement Directorate summoned Sonia Gandhi on June 23 in the National Herald money laundering case, in which her son, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, was questioned for 5 days.
Earlier, Rahul Gandhi left the Enforcement Directorate (ED) headquarters in the national capital after around 12 hours of interrogation in connection with the National Herald newspaper money laundering case.
The Lok Sabha member from Kerala’s Wayanad appeared at the ED headquarters on Tuesday, accompanied by his sister Priyanka Gandhi.
Rahul Gandhi was detained by the ED for more than 27 hours on three consecutive days, from June 13 to June 15, and was called again on June 20. He was interrogated for around 14 hours on Monday.
Earlier on June 13, the Congress leader spoke for the first time before ED investigators in the matter.
He requested an exemption from appearing on June 16, and was called on June 17. However, the senior Congress leader requested that his questioning be postponed due to the sickness of his mother, Sonia Gandhi. On June 20, the ED agreed to let him join the investigation at his request.
