The government stated Rajya Sabha that no new indent has been filed with the press for the printing of Rs 2,000 denomination notes beginning in 2018-19.
The production of certain denominations of banknotes is chosen by the government in conjunction with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). In response to a question about the status of 2,000 denomination currency notes being printed in 2019-20, 2020-21, and 2021-22, Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary stated “According to the RBI, no new indent has been placed with the presses for printing of Rs 2000 denomination banknotes from 2018-19 onwards.”
While being questioned about whether the government is aware of the country’s counterfeit currency notes, the minister stated, citing the Reserve Bank of India, that the total number of counterfeit currency notes detected in the banking system for the fiscal year 2021-22, which ended in March, was 230,971 pieces.
The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) is the central organisation that accumulates data on crimes, including fake currency notes, reported to it by states and union territories and publishes it in its yearly edition ‘Crime in India.’
According to the minister, RBI undertakes regular training programmes on the identification of counterfeit notes for employees/officers of banks and other institutions that handle big amounts of cash.
