On Monday, President Droupadi Murmu visited the iconic Cellular Jail at Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, paying respects at the Martyr’s Column with a wreath.
Murmu, currently on a five-day trip to the archipelago starting Monday, also visited ‘Swantantraya Jyot’, an eternal flame dedicated to the numerous freedom fighters who endured confinement in the jail.
Additionally, she attended the light and sound show at the Cellular Jail.
Later, the President participated in a civic reception held in her honor by the Andaman and Nicobar Administration at the Dr BR Ambedkar Institute of Technology.
Addressing the gathering, the President underscored the strategic significance of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, serving as a vital link between India and countries in South and Southeast Asia. She emphasized that these islands are integral to India’s Act East Policy.
Highlighting the natural allure of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the President noted ongoing efforts to boost tourism in the Union Territory.
She mentioned the inauguration of a new terminal at Veer Savarkar Airport and the substantial growth in tourist arrivals from 2014 to 2022, attributed to enhanced digital and physical connectivity. The President anticipated that sustained tourism growth would create employment opportunities and foster the advancement of the local youth.
Discussing the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surrounding the islands, covering about 30% of India’s total EEZ, the President underscored the significant role of the blue economy in India’s economic development. She acknowledged ongoing initiatives to promote the export of fish and marine products.
Emphasizing the importance of preserving the pristine environment and ecology of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the President stressed the necessity of striking a balance between development and environmental conservation.
