SC to hear journalist Rana Ayyub’s plea against summons in PMLA case on Jan 25

The Supreme Court announced on Monday that it will hear a petition filed by journalist Rana Ayyub challenging the summons issued to her by the Ghaziabad court in Uttar Pradesh in connection with a Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) case registered against her by the Enforcement Directorate on January 25. (ED).

Advocate Vrinda Grover brought the matter before a bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, stating the matter was slated for hearing today, but the bench that was supposed to hear the case was not sitting today. The case has been scheduled for hearing before a bench of Justices V Ramasubramanian and JB Pardiwala, who are sitting with the Chief Justice today. The CJI has stated that the case would be heard on Wednesday.

Grover stated that the Ghaziabad court has issued a summons against Ayyub for January 27; hence, the subject demands an urgent listing. The ED filed a lawsuit against her in Ghaziabad court in October 2022 for suspected irregularities in openly seeking cash.

The case was opened in September 2021 in Ghaziabad on the basis of a complaint filed against Ayyub under the terms of the Indian Penal Code, the Information Technology Amendment Act, and the Black Money Act.

The FIR claimed that she fraudulently obtained monies from the general public in the name of charity by starting fundraising initiatives.
Ayyub was accused of receiving foreign donations without first registering with the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA).
