S Jaishankar, India’s minister for external affairs, met with James Cleverly, his British counterpart, on Wednesday and expressed India’s concern for the safety and wellbeing of the Indian population in the UK.
His comments followed recent accounts of violence against the Indian community in various UK towns. Jaishankar reported having a cordial discussion about moving the India-UK Roadmap 2030 forward with the UK Foreign Secretary. The conversation, according to the minister of external affairs, also touched on problems relating to the Indo-Pacific, Ukraine, and the UNSC.

The spiral of violence began last month after India defeated Pakistan in the Asia Cup T20 encounter. According to a police statement, there was an altercation between several groups of young males in Leicestershire. So far, dozens of people have been detained in connection with this.
On social media, a number of videos and articles depicting organised gangs spotted terrorising and vandalising Hindus in Leicester, United Kingdom, have been making the rounds. This event comes after a wave of violence and disturbance in Leicester’s eastern region.
The violence against the Indian community in Leicester was denounced earlier on Monday by the Indian High Commission in the UK, which also called for swift action against those responsible.
In a statement, the High Commission indicated that it had raised the problem with the UK government.
“We vehemently condemn the acts of violence against the Indian Community in Leicester as well as the destruction of Hindu temples and other symbols. We have pressed the UK authorities on this issue and asked them to take swift action against those responsible for these attacks.
We urge the government to offer the impacted individuals protection “The statement read.
