In a meeting with General Mohamed Zaki on Tuesday in Cairo, Egypt’s Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, who is on a three-day visit there, discussed a number of efforts to deepen bilateral defence ties between the two nations.
A Memorandum of Understanding on defence cooperation was also signed by Singh, who claimed that the action will strengthen relationships between Egypt and India and give them new life and dynamism.
Singh stated in a tweet, “I had a wonderful meeting in Cairo with General Mohamed Zaki, the defence minister of Egypt. We conducted in-depth conversations about a number of proposals to increase our bilateral defence engagements. Our relationships have been given new life and synergy with the signing of the MoU on Defense Cooperation.”
During the visit, the defence minister noted that the two countries’ commerce has grown tremendously and that Egypt is one of India’s top trading partners in Africa.
Rajnath Singh is in Egypt for a three-day visit that begins on Sunday in an effort to strengthen bilateral defence collaboration.
The two leaders decided to focus on joint training, defence co-production, and maintenance of Egypt is one of the largest investment destinations for India in the region with an existing Indian investment of USD 3.15 billion. Earlier Monday, Singh called Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi in Cairo. Indian enterprises in Egypt are still carrying out numerous projects.
A delegation from the Indian Air Force also travelled to Egypt on June 22 to take part in a bilateral “Tactical Leadership Programme” with the Egyptian Air Force in order to strengthen defence cooperation between the two nations.
Since 2022 is the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Egypt and India, it bears special importance.

India and Egypt also have friendly defence ties. The 1960s saw efforts to jointly build a fighter aircraft as a result of strong Air Force collaboration. From the 1960s to 1984, IAF pilots also taught Egyptian pilots. Since 2015, there have been a number of high-level visits and interactions between defence delegations.
