The classic movie “Bawarchi,” starring the late, great actor Rajesh Khanna, is being remade. The director of the new version is none other than Anushree Mehta, a filmmaker. Hrishikesh Mukherjee directed “Bawarchi” in its first iteration in 1972. Rajesh Khanna, Jaya Bachchan, and Asrani were all featured. It’s interesting to note that Tapan Sinha’s 1966 Bengali film “Galpo Holeo Satti,” starring Rabi Ghosh, was also remade.

Excited about directing the film, Anushree said, “When my business partner Abir Sengupta (Jaadugar Films), Sameer Raj Sippy and I decided to join hands to produce these three iconic films, we were clear that we would leave no stone unturned in remaking them with utmost love and respect. During our discussion on Bawarchi, Abir and Sameer were of the opinion that I should be writing and directing the remake.”
“They were convinced that I would be able to tell the story in a manner which would make them proud. We were in sync with our vision and I wholeheartedly agreed to come on board as the writer-director,” she added.

The adaptation, according to Anushree, would reflect her “confidence, honesty, and sensitivity.” “The goal of retelling a movie is to preserve its essence and goals while updating it to reflect modern society and make it more relatable to the world we live in. Hrishida in his day recreated Bawarchi, making it relevant to that period of time because the film was itself a remake of a Bengali film. My attempt will share a similar goal: telling the beloved tale of Bawarchi in a way that will appeal to audiences of all ages in a family setting. My goal is to create a memorable and healthy family experience,” she remarked. The movie is currently casting.
