Speculation among the party’s rank and file has been sparked by posters of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee proclaiming that the people of the State will witness a new Trinamool within the next six months. Over the past few days, south Kolkata has seen a number of these posters promising a “new and reformed” TMC, including images of Mr. Banerjee.
According to the poster bearing the general secretary of the party’s image, “a new Trinamool will emerge in the next six months, the way the common people demand.” It’s interesting that Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister, is not mentioned at all in the posters. Prior to Mr. Abhishek Banerjee’s ascent within the party, the Chief Minister’s picture was almost never absent from a significant party campaign.
The spokesperson for the party, Kunal Ghosh, claimed that there was nothing improper about the posters and that they might have been “the creation of overzealous party employees.” Abhishek Banerjee has stated that we must continue to learn and develop as people on numerous occasions. The needs of the majority must be met, according to Mr. Ghosh.
The incident comes at a time when the TMC is under fire for the arrest of party stalwarts Anubrata Mondal, district president of Birbhum, and Partha Chatterjee, a former minister. While the TMC leadership has abandoned Mr. Chatterjee, party chairwoman Ms. Mamata Banerjee supported Mr. Mondal on August 14. Following Mr. Mondal’s arrest, the party declared that it has “zero tolerance for corruption.”
Disagreements between the party’s old guard and new leadership had surfaced in February of this year. All party committees were disbanded by party chairman Ms. Mamata Banerjee, who also reappointed Mr. Abhishek Banerjee as general secretary of the party. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the head of the state Congress, claimed that the posters were a sign of internal strife inside the TMC. Trinamool internal disputes have come to light over the past year, according to Mr. Chowdhury. The TMC would continue to be led by Ms. Mamata Banerjee, according to the five-time Congress MP from Behrampore in Murshidabad.
