In one of the deadliest terrorist strikes in recent memory, heavily armed militants linked to the Lashkar-e-Taiba opened fire on a group of tourists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam on Tuesday, killing at least 26 people and injuring several others. The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of Lashkar, has claimed responsibility for the massacre.
The attack took place in broad daylight at the scenic Baisaran Meadows. According to eyewitnesses, two to three assailants dressed in military uniforms approached a gathering of tourists—many of them women and elderly—and began firing indiscriminately. Some reports suggest the attackers asked about the victims’ religion before opening fire.
Videos captured moments after the incident show a scene of horror, with bodies scattered across the ground and survivors screaming in panic, searching for their family members.
Security forces swiftly arrived at the spot and launched a major anti-terror operation in the region. Senior officials confirmed that a manhunt is underway to track down the perpetrators.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the attack, calling it “an abomination” and “far more devastating than any civilian attack witnessed in recent years.” Political leaders across party lines echoed their outrage and grief.
