As Delhi gears up for its first mayor in a decade, two Aam Aadmi Party candidates will take on the BJP’s candidate.

Over a month after the ruling Aam Aadmi Party ousted the BJP after three terms in power, Delhi’s Municipal Corporation brace for its next Mayor today. Following the AAP’s victory over the BJP in December, the newly-elected Municipal Corporation will meet for the first time today.

First-time councilor Shelly Oberoi, from East Patel Nagar, will be the AAP’s mayoral candidate, while councilor Aaley Mohammed Iqbal, from Chandni Mahal ward, will be the party’s deputy mayor candidate. The BJP, however, has fielded Rekha Gupta and Kamal Bagdi as candidates for mayor and deputy mayor, respectively.

The first meeting of the newly-elected municipal corporation will be held on January 6 in the presence of the L-G who will determine the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and members of the standing committee for the year. The AAP and Delhi Lt Governor V K Saxena are at odds once again ahead of Friday’s polls since the latter chose BJP councilor Satya Sharma to preside over the mayoral vote.

The meeting will take place at 11 am at the Aruna Asif Ali Sabhagar at Dr SP Mukherjee Civic Centre, New Delhi.
