The BRICS alliance has announced the addition of six new member countries, namely Argentina, Ethiopia, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

Starting January 1, 2024, the updated membership will come into effect. The leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) have endorsed the group’s enlargement, a significant development, marking the first expansion since 2010 when South Africa was included in the alliance.

President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa announced the inclusion of Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE in the BRICS group during the initial phase of expansion. This move means that six out of the world’s nine leading oil producers are now members of the BRICS. Ramaphosa shared this news while delivering the Johannesburg Declaration at the 15th BRICS Summit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “India has always supported the expansion of BRICS and has always believed that adding new members will strengthen BRICS as an organization”.

In his introductory address as both the Summit’s chair and BRICS leader, President Ramaphosa unveiled the announcement. Subsequently, he extended invitations to his fellow leaders and colleagues from the BRICS nations to deliver their respective statements.
