Ghulam Nabi Azad, a seasoned Congress leader who quit his more than five-decade affiliation with the party last month, is set to start his party within the next few days.

“Before the celebration starts tomorrow (Monday), I’m inviting the media. I’m here to speak with leaders and workers “Shortly after arriving from Delhi, Azad spoke with the media at his home in this city.

The information was corroborated by a close aide to the previous chief minister of J&K.

He added that Azad will be in Srinagar on September 27 and that he has two different meetings lined up later today with senior and second-rung politicians.

He said that the new party’s name and flag had been decided upon and that it would only be a matter of time until the new organisation appeared on the political scene in Jammu and Kashmir.

73-year-old Azad resigned on August 26 from Congress, calling the party “comprehensively ruined.” Rahul Gandhi was also criticised by him for allegedly “demolishing” the whole consultation process inside the party.

Numerous former ministers and leaders, including former deputy chief minister Tara Chand, as well as more than two dozen well-known Congress stalwarts, quit the party in favour of Azad. Two former lawmakers, one from the PDP and one from the Apni party, did the same.

He stated that restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s sovereignty and defending the citizens’ rights to their land and employment will be the top priorities of his party.
