An FIR filed in connection with the Ranchi unrest on June 10 detailed how the mob became rowdy and miscreants opened fire on police.
According to the FIR, the miscreants fired 60 to 80 rounds of ammunition before attempting to climb the Hanuman Temple on Ranchi’s main thoroughfare.
The FIR was filed by Circle Officer (CO) Amit Bhagat, who stated that he was patrolling when thousands of people protested Nupur Sharma’s offensive statement against Prophet Muhammad.
According to the FIR, the protest march was held without authorisation. Police attempted to disperse the throng, but they became aggressive and began throwing stones at the officers.
FIR further states that “miscreants plotted to target the Hanuman Temple in order to incite religious rioting and continued stone-pelting. The mob smashed the police cordon in an effort to climb on the shrine.”
“Controlled air fire and use of force were ordered as a result, which partially succeeded in dispersing the throng. Five rounds of tear gas were shot, followed by six rounds of air shooting and a lathi-charge…after which the throng was subdued” FIR stated.
Ranchi Police states that 29 people have been detained in connection with violence in Ranchi.
After Friday prayers on June 10, a protest erupted in Ranchi in response to provocative statements against Prophet Muhammad made by suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesman Nupur Sharma and expelled leader Naveen Jindal. Two people were killed, while numerous more were injured.
