Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee emphasized on Wednesday (March 13) that her state would not tolerate the establishment of “detention camps” similar to those in neighbouring Assam.

She asserted that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is intrinsically linked to the National Register of Citizens (NRC), which is why she and her party oppose the controversial legislation.

Banerjee stated to reporters in Jalpaiguri that the opposition to the CAA stems from its association with the NRC. She expressed her disapproval of the CAA, labeling it as a “political ploy” orchestrated by the ruling BJP ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

During an administrative meeting in Jalpaiguri, Banerjee criticized the CAA for its alleged intention to sow communal discord among the nation’s populace. She particularly denounced the exclusion of Muslims from the purview of the legislation, which grants Indian citizenship to non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.

Banerjee highlighted the distinctiveness of the citizenship-granting process proposed by the central government compared to other nations. She raised concerns regarding the lack of clarity in the application process for the CAA and its potential implications on people’s rights.

Meanwhile Mamata Banerjee in Siliguri said, “West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “Whatever we have to say, we will say to the public. They (BJP) say we will get 400 seats…We leave everything to the public, we will accept whoever the public votes for, but if the BJP will do elections forcefullly , we will not accept it.”
