Following a sudden storm accompanied by heavy rainfall in Guwahati, Assam, a section of the ceiling outside Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport collapsed on Sunday March 31). Fortunately, there were no reported injuries in the incident. However, the collapse prompted authorities of the Adani Group-controlled airport to temporarily suspend operations and redirect six flights to alternate destinations.

A viral video circulating on social media captured the moment of the ceiling collapse, with passengers and airport staff scrambling for cover. Additional footage showed airport personnel working to clear excess water from the premises.

Utpal Baruah, the Chief Airport Officer (CAO), informed news agency PTI that a large tree outside the airport complex, near the Oil India area, was uprooted by the storm, blocking a nearby road. “The old tree couldn’t withstand the force, resulting in the ceiling giving way and water seeping in. Fortunately, there were no injuries, and the situation is now under control,” he stated.

Baruah also reassured that he was personally overseeing the situation to minimize inconvenience for passengers. Due to the storm and reduced visibility caused by heavy rain, six flights had to be diverted.

Meanwhile, flights operated by IndiGo, Air India, and Air India Express were rerouted to Agartala and Kolkata until normal operations could resume.
