The Quad summit has begun in Tokyo, Japan in full swing. After an in-person meeting, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. Antony Albanese, who was recently sworn in as the prime minister of Australia, reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to Quad and said that his government is committed to working with Quad countries.
He added that the new Australian government gives priority to taking action on climate change and building a more resilient Indo-Pacific region through economic, cyber, energy, health, and environmental security.
PM Modi extended his best wishes to the Australian PM and expressed that his presence amongst Quad leaders 24 hours after taking the oath reflects the strength of Quad friendship and his commitment towards it.
Speaking about the significance of Quad, PM Modi said that Quad has made an important place for itself before the world in such a short span of time. He emphasised that today, Quad’s scope has become extensive, its form effective and their mutual trust, and determination is giving new energy & enthusiasm to democratic powers.
He further added that at the Quad level, a free, open and inclusive Indo Pacific Region is getting encouraged and is the shared goal of the Quad countries.
US President Joe Biden said US will be a strong, steady & enduring partner in Indo-Pacific. Calling the Quad Indo-Pacific powers, he commented that as long as Russia continues the war, Quad countries are going to be partners and lead a global response as they stay together for the shared values & vision they have.
Japanese PM Fumio Kishida, on the other hand, speaking about the Russia-Ukraine war said that Russian invasion of Ukraine squarely challenges the principles which are enshrined in the UN Charter.
