Sergei Lavrov, the foreign minister of Russia, has once more supported India’s bid for permanent membership at the UN Security Council (UNSC), arguing that New Delhi has benefited the Council by taking a strong position on both international and regional matters.
“I believe that India is now one of the nations with the strongest economic growth—if not the strongest—in the world. Its population will soon surpass that of any other nation. In addition to having considerable diplomatic expertise in resolving a variety of issues, New Delhi also enjoys authority and a solid reputation in its region “Lavrov declared. At the Primakov Readings International Forum, which was held in Moscow on December 7, Lavrov made these comments in response to questions from the media.
According to him, India participates actively in the United Nations and a number of South Asian integration organisations under the SCO.
“India participates in a number of South Asian integration bodies under the SCO and is actively involved in the UN. India is a nation that not only wants to be but also serves as one of the most significant roles in the formation of a multipolar world “Lavrov said.
Previously, Lavrov stated that the Security Council will be more democratic if nations from Africa, Asia, and Latin America are involved in his speech to the 77th United Nations General Assembly in September of this year.
In his talk, he stated that “India and Brazil, in particular, are major international actors and should be counted for permanent membership in the council.”
According to the Russian foreign minister, the promotion of Japan, Germany, India, and Brazil’s petitions to the UN Security Council shows multipolarity.
Given their positions on global and regional concerns, India and Brazil may provide value to the UNSC, according to Lavrov.
The US, UK, France, and Russia, four of the Council’s five permanent members, have backed giving India permanent membership in the UN body.
We welcome the addition of additional permanent seats for Brazil, Germany, India, and Japan to the Council as well as permanent African representation, according to Barbara Woodward, the UK’s ambassador to the UN.
The Deputy Permanent Representative of France to the UN stated that “France’s position is constant and well known: We want the Council to be more representative of today’s world, in a way that further strengthens its authority and effectiveness.” She was speaking to the UN General Assembly plenary meeting on the “Question of equitable representation on and increase in the membership of the Security Council and other matters related to the Security Council.”
In December, India’s current two-year term as a non-permanent Security Council member will come to an end. The 15-nation Council is presently presided over by India.
India has taken up the Council’s presidency twice in its two years as an elected member of the UN Security Council. In August 2021, India had previously taken the UNSC Presidency.
