India is all set to celebrate its 79th Independence Day on Friday, August 15, with grand patriotic enthusiasm, marking the end of over two centuries of British colonial rule in 1947.

President Droupadi Murmu addressed the nation on Thursday evening, sharing her thoughts ahead of the national celebrations.

Independence Day is traditionally observed with flag-hoisting ceremonies across the country, accompanied by the singing of the national anthem, cultural performances, and drill displays. This year’s celebrations follow the theme Naya Bharat,’ symbolizing India’s vision of becoming a prosperous, secure, and self-reliant nation by 2047, as stated in an official release from the Ministry of Defence.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the main event at the historic Red Fort, where he will unfurl the National Flag and deliver his address to the nation. Flying Officer Rashika Sharma has been designated to assist in hoisting the Tricolour.

The Red Fort celebrations will host approximately 5,000 distinguished guests from across the country, representing diverse fields. Attendees include members of India’s contingent for the Special Olympics 2025, international sports champions, the 50 highest-performing Swachhta campaign workers, and tribal children from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The Indian Air Force is overseeing this year’s ceremony, which will feature a ceremonial Guard of Honour, a 21-gun salute, and a special flypast. During the flypast, both the National Flag and the flag of Operation Sindoor will be displayed, highlighting India’s military accomplishments alongside the celebration of national freedom.
