Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi launched his Voter Adhikar Yatra from Bihar on Sunday. The 16-day march will focus on electoral reforms and highlight alleged irregularities in the voter list revision. Opposition parties have accused the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls of removing over 6.5 million names, mostly from backward communities, minorities, and migrant workers. The Yatra began with a large rally at Saura Aerodrome Ground in Sasaram and will culminate with a grand rally at Patna’s historic Gandhi Maidan on September 1.
The Opposition has strongly criticised the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls. Leaders claimed that the removal of millions of names amounted to tampering with votes and disenfranchising vulnerable communities. They alleged that backward classes, minorities, and migrant workers were disproportionately affected. Congress leaders said the Voter Adhikar Yatra aims to create awareness about electoral transparency and safeguard democratic rights. The campaign also intends to mobilise public support ahead of future elections. Senior party leaders have described the yatra as an attempt to expose irregularities and build momentum for clean and fair electoral practices in India.
The Yatra will pass through more than 20 districts in Bihar, covering a distance of over 1,300 km. On August 18, the march continues through Dev Road Amba in Kutumba, covering Aurangabad district. On August 19, events will be held at Hanuman Mandir in Punama Wazirganj, focusing on Gaya and Nawada. August 20 is marked as a rest and interaction day. On August 21, Gandhi will reach Sheikhpura and Lakhisarai, while August 22 will focus on Bhagalpur division with a meeting at Chandan Bagh Chowk in Munger. Each day features rallies, padyatras, or meetings to engage with voters.
On August 23, Rahul Gandhi will enter northeast Bihar at Kursela Chowk in Katihar before covering Purnia district on August 24. August 25 will be a break day for internal meetings. On August 26, the march reaches Supaul, followed by Darbhanga on August 27. On August 28, the Yatra will continue through Sitamarhi, while August 29 will cover West Champaran with a padyatra at Bettiah’s Gandhi Chowk. On August 30, the march will enter Saran district with a rally at Ekma Chowk in Chapra and conclude the day at Arrah. The final mega rally is planned in Patna.
