Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, a Congress politician who rose through the political ranks in Himachal Pradesh, was sworn in as the state’s fifteenth chief minister on Sunday during a ceremony in Shimla.
The swearing-in event took place at Shimla’s Raj Bhavan, 1:30pm today. Sukhu (58), a steadfast supporter of the Gandhis, is a four-term MLA and the previous leader of the state’s Congress.
Due to his extensive network in the hill state and his many years of service to the organisation, Sukhu is regarded as a kind and approachable leader. He also has extensive organisational expertise in the state as a result of his long-standing affiliation with the grand old party.
From 2013 to 2019, he served as the party’s state unit president. Virbhadra Singh, the party’s tallest leader and a six-time chief minister, did not always agree with what he had to say.
In Himachal Pradesh, Sukhu has advocated for developing and elevating new Congress leaders.
The central leadership of the Congress was reportedly eager to broaden its choice because all of the chief ministers of the Congress during the preceding forty years were from Rampur Bushahr.
Sukhu will fill the position of top Congress leader for the first time to come from “lower Himachal.”
Sukhu comes from a family that is middle class. He got involved in politics while still a student and ran for office as an NSUI candidate. He served as the state’s Indian Youth Congress and NSUI president. Elections for the Shimla Municipal Corporation were fought and won by him. In the 2003 assembly elections, Sukhu defeated Nadaun for the first time.
Sukhu served as the head of the Congress Campaign Committee during the assembly elections, during which the party made attractive promises such as an old-age pension plan while concentrating on local concerns.
After Prem Kumar Dhumal of the BJP, he will be the second chief minister from the Hamirpur district. Congress won 40 seats in the state’s Assembly.
