Milinda Moragoda, Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to India, met with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday and thanked her for the brief emergency help India offered to the island nation during its challenging moment.
According to an official statement issued by the Sri Lankan High Commission in New Delhi, the Sri Lankan ambassador also updated the finance minister on Sri Lanka’s ongoing conversations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the current condition of the country’s debt restructuring process.
Taking to Twitter, Sri Lanka’s High Commission in New Delhi tweeted, “High Commissioner @MilindaMoragoda met with the Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister of India @nsitharaman today (06) to review the status of bilateral economic cooperation. #lka”
Notably, it was the latest in a series of discussions between High Commissioner Moragoda and Sitharaman on Indian economic cooperation and support to Sri Lanka in the context of the current crisis, according to an official release.
Moragoda also warned her of the terrible consequences of Sri Lanka’s present economic crisis on the country’s impoverished and most vulnerable inhabitants.
The High Commissioner stressed that India could play a vital role in Sri Lanka’s economic resurgence through expanding investment, tourism, and commerce between the two nations. The situation of bilateral economic cooperation was also discussed by Minister Sitharaman and High Commissioner Moragoda.
