A special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has convicted Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik in connection to the funding of terrorists in the Kashmir Valley.
The court has also sought an account of his financial condition from Malik and also called for a report from the NIA. The debate on the sentence will take place during the next hearing on May 25.
Malik was accused of criminal conspiracy, waging war against the country, other illegal activities and breach of peace in Kashmir. Malik had confessed his crime in this case.
On the last date of the hearing, Malik told the court that he was guilty of UAPA sections 16 (terrorist activity), 17 (raising funds for terroristic activity), 18 (conspiracy to commit terroristic act), and 20 (being a member of a terrorist group or organization).
Malik stated that he does not want to challenge the charges against him under sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 124-A (sedition) of the Indian Penal Code.
In the last hearing on May 10, the court had given charges against Farooq Ahmed Dar alias Bitta Karate, Shabir Shah, Masarat Alam, Mohammad Yusuf Shah, Aftab Ahmed Shah, Altaf Ahmed Shah, Naeem Khan, Mohammad Akbar Khande, Raja Mehrajuddin Kalwal, Bashir Ahmed Bhat, Zahoor Ahmed.
Charges were formally framed against other Kashmiri separatist leaders including Shah Watali, Shabbir Ahmed Shah, Abdul Rashid Sheikh, and Naval Kishore Kapoor.
A chargesheet was also filed against Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) founder Hafiz Saeed and Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin, who have been declared absconders in the case.
