On Sunday, Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay announced his decision to step down from his position effective March 5. Notably, in 2022, he had ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate purported irregularities related to the recruitment of teachers and non-teaching staff in government schools in West Bengal.

Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay stated that he will submit his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu, the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, and Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.

Justice Gangopadhyay clarified that he has no intentions of entering politics following his resignation, debunking rumors suggesting otherwise. There had been conjecture that he might contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Tamluk, a constituency previously held by BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari from 2009 to 2016.

The judge stated that he would address all inquiries regarding his resignation and future plans on Tuesday.

Last year, Justice Gangopadhyay faced criticism from the Supreme Court for granting an interview to a news channel regarding a pending case related to a teachers’ recruitment scam. In response, CJI DY Chandrachud instructed the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court to assign the case to a different judge.
