Chris Jericho professional wrestling future is once again being talked about. When fans last saw him in AEW, he left Big Bill and Bryan Keith on their own by walking out on them. Jericho has been an AEW veteran since 2019 and his contract will be up in the fall.
WWE Talks Heating Up
On the most recent episode of the Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer explained that talks of a Jericho resurgence into WWE have grown. “Jericho is actually a really big story. His contract is up at the end of the year, or late in the year, and there’s certainly been lots and lots of talk about WWE,” Meltzer said.
He added, “I know from a WWE standpoint that there is lots of talk there about Jericho. People speculating Royal Rumble. Nobody has officially said anything, nor will anyone officially say anything.” Nothing is confirmed, but the gossips about Jericho make fans speculate a lot.
Contract Countdown and Rumor Mill
WWE can not negotiate with Jericho officially until his AEW contract is over. But when the expiry date is near, there are rumors likely to increase. “That’s a big story to watch at the end of the year. But yeah, there’s been a lot, a lot of talk I’ve heard in the last week from many different people about the situation with Jericho and the belief that he’s inevitably going to be in WWE,” Meltzer explained.
This conjecture comes just months after Jericho alluded that he may be willing to come back. “Of course I would consider going back there. I would consider not going back there too. It just depends on what the situation is and what’s going on with me,” Jericho said during a Horror Rock and Wrestle Fest forum.
Jericho’s Legacy and AEW Impact
The role of Jericho in AEW can hardly be overestimated. He was one of the original stars of the company and gave credibility and legitimacy to the title immediately, and helped to establish the AEW World Championship. He does not have as central a role as before, but the core of AEW is a show full of stars like Hangman Page, Jon Moxley, Kenny Omega, Kazuchika Okada, Swerve Strickland, and Will Ospreay, who is moving the company forward.
The women division is also doing quite well and getting the screen time they deserve to propel AEW programming. A lot will be determined by how Jericho will evaluate his future contributions to the industry. He would bow out of the WWE in a John Cena style retirement tour and leave a legendary chapter in the history of wrestling.
