Tsunami Warning Live Updates: A powerful magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula early Wednesday, prompting Japan’s meteorological agency to issue a tsunami alert for its Pacific coastline. The alert was an upgrade from an earlier advisory, with officials warning that tsunami waves up to three meters could hit northern Japan’s coastlines in under 30 minutes. The quake, located around 250 kilometers from Hokkaido, was shallow – making tsunami generation more likely, experts say. Japan has activated an emergency taskforce, while Hawaii, Alaska, and parts of the US West Coast are also under varying levels of tsunami warnings or watches. In Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the Russian city closest to the epicenter, residents rushed into the streets as buildings swayed and power outages were reported.
