Frank Caprio, yes, the ‘Caught in Providence’ judge everyone loved has died at 88 after fighting cancer. His family put out a statement on Facebook, saying he passed away peacefully, and, honestly, the words “compassion” and “humility” came up a lot.
You’ve probably seen those viral videos, Caprio sitting up there on the bench, cracking a joke or two, letting some stressed-out single mom off the hook for a parking ticket.
He made people laugh, sometimes cry, but mostly he just treated folks like, you know, actual human beings. Not exactly the norm in courtrooms.
Just a day before he passed, he filmed a short message from his hospital bed. Not much fanfare, just him saying he’d hit a rough patch and wouldn’t mind a few prayers sent his way. Straightforward, like always.

Caprio wasn’t just a TV personality, either. The guy spent over half a century practicing law, taught at Providence College, and was on the state’s higher ed board. Community work? Tons of it.
Frank Caprio leaves behind his wife Joyce, five kids, a bunch of grandkids and great-grandkids. His family said he was the kind of husband, dad, and friend who made a real impact, someone whose warmth stuck with you long after you left the room.
